When it comes to buying a ring, whether for yourself or somebody else, finding the right size can be difficult if you don’t already know it. So, to make this process a little easier we have put together a guide to quickly finding the perfect ring size.

We have attached some commissionable links to this guide to products that we recommend for finding your perfect ring size, ring adjusters etc.

Measure an existing ring

The easiest way of working out your own ring size is to measure the diameter of a ring you already own, that you know fits the finger you would like to wear it on.

Measure the inside ring diameter in mm using a ruler, make sure that the ruler is placed to measure the very middle of the ring.

Take a mould of an existing ring

Another option is to press one of your partner’s rings into something mouldable (use a mould compound, clay or even a new bar of soap works!) or draw around the inside on some paper, Either of these can be sent to us for an accurate measurement.

Try on a ring Sizer

If you're in the UK, please get in touch and we can send you a complimentary ring sizer. Alternatively you can order a very affordable adjustable ring sizer or even more accurate metal ring sizer online.

Sizing

Ring sizes in the UK are measured alphabetically. We can also accommodate European dimensions (mm) as well as measurements from the US and Canada, where we will convert your size to the measurements we use here.

Width

Two rings that measure the same size will fit differently on your finger if, for example, one is 2mm wide and the other is 5mm wide, as the extra width will make it feel tighter as it covers more surface of your finger. To ensure the most accurate fit try to make sure the ring sizers you try on are the same width as the ring you intend to order. When ordering your new ring, consider the ring's width as this can impact the right ring size for you. In general the wider the ring, you may wish to size up the band.

As well as differences in finger sizes, people have their own preferences on how loose or tight to wear a ring.

Please get in touch or visit our showroom if you need any advice, or would like to talk through your options.

Fit

A good fit is one that goes on without a struggle but needs a wiggle to come off. Our hands can swell when we are hot, so try to get measured when you’re relaxed and at a normal temperature. We recommend if taking your own ring size that you measure your ring size 3 times throughout the day, morning, mid day and night to get an average reading.

Comfort Fit

Comfort fit is an option we provide, where the ring is rounded on the inside of the band, this means that the metal in contact with your finger is narrower than the band itself. To ensure a good fit, we advise that you go for half a size smaller than your regular narrow ring size.

The comfort fit allows room for your fingers to swell or expand throughout the day. It is also a particularly good choice for those who are not used to wearing rings as it can feel more comfortable and less foreign.

Resizing

If you are not 100% sure on ring size, the best way forward is to choose a ring that is slightly too big. It is often easier to make a larger ring smaller with alterations without causing damage to the piece.

Another option could be to use a ‘Proposal Ring’ instead - this is usually a much more cheap and simple ring used for the surprise of the proposal, and then you and you and your partner can shop for the proper engagement ring later so that they can choose the right size and style to suit them. This is particularly useful for picky partners or those who may have always dreamed of a very specific ring! We have had a few proposal moments whereby family heirloom rings are used for the proposal, we can give this a good clean and polish for you for the special moment or alternatively if we are not near by and you dont want to risk sending the precious ring to us you can spruce it up with a good clean in warm water, washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush to remove any built up grime around stone settings and give it a good buff with a polishing cloth.

Top Tips

Our fingers change size throughout the day due to many factors, such as temperature, exercise and even after sleep. To get the most accurate size we recommend taking your size at three points throughout the day to measure an average.

It’s worth keeping in mind that our dominant hand is often slightly bigger than your non-dominant hand, so unless your partner is left-handed, you may need to size down slightly.

If you are not 100% sure on the ring size, we advise preparing in advance with a plastic ring size adjuster, you can purchase these very affordably online. There are two options for these one that can be cut to size to size and wrapped around your ring to keep it secure and safe on your finger until a resize can be arranged, and another that is fitted to the inside of your ring.
